What "Used By God" Means to Me

The first time I saw the phrase "Used by God," it stopped me mid-scroll. Not because it was clever, but because it named something I'd been circling for years without words for it. I'd spent so long trying to be impressive — successful, admired, enough on my own terms. And here were three small words pointing in the opposite direction: the goal was never to be admired. It was to be used. To be a vessel, something greater could flow through.

For most of my life, I had the equation backwards. I thought being used was a bad thing — what happens when people take from you and leave you empty? The world trains us to protect ourselves, to build a platform, and to make sure we get the credit. So the idea of willingly being used by anyone, even God, felt like surrender in the worst sense. It took me years to learn that it was surrender in the best one.

Being used by God doesn't mean being used up. It's the opposite. When I finally stopped white-knuckling my own plans and offered my ordinary days to Him — my conversations, my work, my failures, my Tuesdays — I didn't feel drained. I felt filled. There's a strange math in the kingdom: the more you pour out, the more you're given to pour. The empty striving I'd known for years was replaced by something steady and full.

It also leveled the ground. I used to think God worked through a special tier of people — the gifted, the eloquent, the put-together. But the truth is, everyone is a vessel, regardless of background or resume or how far they think they've fallen. The single mom, the recovering addict, the burned-out professional, the kid in the back row — all of it is usable in His hands. None of us is too broken or too ordinary to carry something holy.

That's why I wear what I wear. The Christian t-shirts in my closet aren't a fashion statement — they're a daily declaration of whose I am. So what does "used by God" mean to me? It means I'm not the point — and that's the most freeing thing I've ever learned. My job isn't to be enough. It's to be available, and to let Him do the rest through me.
