From Depression to Purpose

There's a particular kind of tired that sleep doesn't fix. For the better part of a year, that was my normal. The depression didn't announce itself with a single bad day — it crept in slowly, draining the color out of things I used to love until getting out of bed felt like climbing out of a well. I kept telling myself I was just busy, just stressed. But deep down, I knew the heaviness had a name, and I was too ashamed to say it out loud.

What made it worse was the guilt. I was a Christian. I'd grown up hearing that joy was the believer's birthright, so my sadness felt like a personal failure of faith. I'd open my Bible and feel nothing. I'd pray into the ceiling and hear silence. The lie I believed in that season was simple and crushing: God has given up on you, and you've given up on Him.

The first crack of light came when I finally told the truth to someone. I called my sister, and instead of fixing me, she just stayed on the phone. She helped me find a counselor, and she started checking in every day. I want to be honest here — healing came through real help, real people, and real time, not a single magic moment. But faith was the thread running through all of it.

One morning my sister mailed me a care package. Inside were a couple of Christian t-shirts with verses about hope, and a note that said, "Wear these on the days you can't find the words." I started doing exactly that. On the heaviest mornings, pulling on those Christian t-shirts was sometimes the only act of faith I could manage — a way of preaching to myself when I couldn't pray.

Slowly, the well got shallower. I began to notice small mercies again: sunlight, music, the taste of coffee. And as I started to surface, something unexpected happened — people in pain started finding me. I could spot the heaviness in others because I'd lived in it. I began mentoring a few people walking the same road, reminding them they weren't alone or forgotten. The very valley I thought disqualified me became the place God used most.

I lean on faith-filled Christian apparel as daily reminders now, and I keep a piece of Christian jewelry close — a small engraved cross I hold when the old fog tries to roll back in. I've given that same Christian jewelry and a few pieces of Christian apparel to others in the trenches, little anchors of hope they can hold onto.

If you're in the well today, please hear this: your depression is not the end of your story, and it is not a verdict on your faith. Reach out. Get help. And hold on — God is not finished, and He still has purpose with your name on it.
