How I Found Purpose Again

For two years, my calendar was full, and my life was empty. On paper, I had everything figured out — a job with a title, a decent apartment, a routine I could run in my sleep. But somewhere along the way I'd stopped asking what any of it was for. I'd wake up, check the boxes, and lie in bed at night with the same hollow question: is this really it? If you've ever felt successful and lost at the same time, you understand a particular kind of quiet ache.

I'd been a believer most of my life, but my faith had shrunk to a Sunday-shaped habit. God was real to me the way a distant relative is real — someone I acknowledged but rarely spoke to. So when the emptiness got loud enough, I didn't have language for it. I just knew something essential had gone missing, and no promotion or weekend plan could fill the gap.

The turning point was almost embarrassingly small. A coworker invited me to volunteer at a Saturday outreach, packing meals for families in our city. I almost didn't go. But standing in that warehouse, handing a box to a tired mom who looked me in the eye and said "God bless you," something cracked open. For the first time in years, I felt used — like my hands were finally doing what they were made for. That morning I wore one of my old Christian t-shirts, and a teenager asked me what the verse meant. We ended up talking for twenty minutes.

That conversation rewired something. I realized purpose wasn't a destination I'd missed — it was a posture I'd abandoned. I started showing up every Saturday. I dug back into Scripture, not out of duty but hunger. I began wearing my faith openly again; the Christian t-shirts I used to save for the gym became daily reminders that I belong to something bigger than my to-do list. I leaned into Christian apparel not as a fashion statement but as a daily declaration of who I serve.

Purpose, I learned, isn't usually found in the dramatic leap. It's found in the small yes — the Saturday you almost skip, the conversation you almost avoid. God didn't hand me a brand-new life. He met me in the one I already had and gave it meaning.

These days, I keep a piece of Christian jewelry on — a simple cross that catches my eye during long workdays and pulls me back to center. I've gifted Christian jewelry to two friends who were drifting the way I once did, along with a stack of faith-filled Christian apparel, hoping it nudges them toward their own Saturday.

If you feel like your life is running without you, take heart. Purpose isn't lost. It's waiting in the next small yes — and God is already there.

What "Used By God" Means to Me

So what does "Used by God" mean to me? It means I'm not the point — and that's the most freeing thing I've ever learned. My job isn't to be enough. It's to be available, and to let Him do the rest ...
